The Light Keeper

The Light Keeper Series, Book 1

Wishes aren't all they're cracked up to be... especially when you have to capture the Fairies who grant them to you.

When a misadventure cleaning out the attic leads Isaac to release a faerie trapped in a glass ball of light, he believes he's struck gold--in the form of wishes. But when strange things start to happen around town, Isaac begins to wonder if the increasingly unfortunate events are his doing.

Only his mysterious neighbor, Yara, knows the truth.

Can Yara's strength and wisdom guide Isaac into his new role?
Can Isaac make things right again?
Or will his dream-come-true turn into his worst nightmare?

This book is a fantastic adventure! Isaac's accidental release of a faerie promises wishes but quickly spirals into chaos, with strange things happening around town. The twist on faeries and wishes gone wrong had me hooked from the start. Isaac's journey as a Light Keeper, guided by Yara, was full of excitement and unexpected twists. The characters are engaging, the magic is fresh, and the story keeps you on your toes. If you love magic, adventure, and a bit of mystery, you won’t want to miss this!

Isaac starts the way I'd guess most kids would if they found a way to have magical beings do their bidding. He takes full advantage, without thoughts about any consequences. Once he finds out how bad things are, he works with Yara to try to fix his mistake, even though doing so puts him in real danger. Definitely a fun read, and I look forward to the next book.

After listening to the audio version of book 1 I was delighted to find out there was a book 2. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and love the partnership between yara and Isaac. Although this book is aimed at a younger audience I’m glad I read it. Finger crossed there will be a 3rd book

Did you know?

  • There are over 14 different faerie types that appear in this book
  • When it was still in the development stages, my editor suggested that I swap Isaac and Yara, making her the impulsive Light Keeper and Isaac the studious Guardian
  • The Quest Master game Isaac buys is a small nod to Everquest, the game I spent hours and hours playing while in High school

Notable Characters

Issac

Isaac is your typical 12-year-old. He hates homework and chores and loves to play video games and hang out with his friends. But breaking open a magical glass ball changes his life forever. As a Light Keeper, he is responsible for stopping the bad faeries. Used to doing the bare minimum, Isaac will need to learn to put his ego aside to become the hero he needs to be.

Yara

Yara is only 12, but she has had the weight of the world on her shoulders for years. With her mom frozen by faerie magic, an absent caretaker, and learning how to be a Guardian, her plate is full. She has no time for nonsense. Being prepared is of the utmost importance to her. Don’t assume she’s weak because her nose is always in a book; there’s more to Yara than meets the eye.

Cristo

Cristo is the first faerie released from the chest in Isaac’s attic. From the ability to make himself tiny to running at lightning speed, Isaac wonders what more this Brownie is capable of.

Cristo may appear to be an intimidating figure, but don't let that fool you. He cares about his family more than anything in any world and nothing will stop him from getting back to them.

Jess & Jay

Jess and Jay have been Isaac's best friends since they were five. They enjoy a good joke, riding scooters with Isaac, and playing video games. Everything is about fun with them. When Isaac becomes more flaky and secretive, they begin to feel left out, but only because there's one truth they've never shared with their best friend.

Ms. Blankenship

Isaac's favorite school subject is history and no one teaches it better than Ms. Blankenship. After releasing Cristo, Isaac notices his favorite teacher treating him strangely and he doesn't know why. There is more to this teacher than meets the eye. When faeries begin to run amuck in town, Isaac will learn just why she's so good at teaching history.
